At the end of the 18th century, Erddig, in Wales, was the family residence of Philip Yorke and his wife Elizabeth. They would have chosen this hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, profusely decorated with exquisite birds and flowers, for guests staying in the State Bedroom of the property. The original painting was delicate and intricately observed, with birds appearing in pairs; a subtle nod to the Chinese concept of the interconnectedness of opposites (yin and yang). The flowers depicted here are magnolia (symbolizing feminine beauty) and peony (symbolizing eminence). Elements from the original have been taken to create a versatile and contemporary floral and bird motif, in five glorious color combinations.
