Inspiration from the Calico Shell archive: Design for a printed chintz fabric, England, 1760-70s

The exquisite print was taken from a tiny hand-painted work of art for a chintz textile that reflects the tremendous artistry of the 18th century British textile industry. The term 'chintz' is related to a Sanskrit word meaning 'coloured' or 'spotted', and today refers to any cotton or linen furnishing fabric with a print, but would initially have been used to describe lightweight cotton fabrics created in India for the English market.
